Project A
A thousand points of light project, Purpose is to illuminate the Washington
Monument on the 4th of July at noon by gathering on the north and west sides
of the building large numbers of people each holding a small 6 inch to one foot
wide mirror that can be a plain or colored glass mirror, red and yellow works
best, blue works well but is not as intense in day light. By reflecting sunlight
onto the building we would create a spectacular spectacle. Visible for huge
distances and possibly becoming a annual event.
One of the reasons for the youtube works was to see how well I could put to the
test the concept of six degrees of separation to the application of creating large
public art performances. I was thinking that by providing content on youtube and
E-Bay that I could get interest in my Solargraphic projects and grow participation.
Six degrees of separation refers to the idea that, if a person is one "step" away
from each person he or she knows and two "steps" away from each person who
is known by one of the people he or she knows, then everyone is no more than
six "steps" away from each person on Earth. Several studies, such as Milgram's
small world experiment have been conducted to empirically measure this
connectedness. While the exact number of links between people differs
depending on the population measured, it is generally found to be relatively
small. Hence, six degrees of separation is somewhat synonymous with the idea
of the "small world" phenomenon.
I envisioned that by six degrees of separation that I may be able to gather a
small number of people who would be interested in the project. Who would then
gather more of such interested people for the purpose of creating the
phenomena. And the resulting Art work.
